On Tuesday, April 22,
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Rural Development Agency, presented
the LaGrange County Regional Utility District with a check for $3,220,000
for their Lake Shipshewana wastewater collection and treatment system
project during a special Earth Day Celebration.
The planning for this
$3.2 project began in 1991, when the LaGrange County Sewer District Board
produced an initial report showing the need for wastewater collection and
treatment in the county’s most populated areas. The project further
developed with an engineering study and application for funds through
Rural Development completed in 2005.
The project will
provide sewer service developed areas surrounding Shipshewana Lake.
The U.S. Department
of Agriculture, Rural Development Agency is financing the project with a
$1.45 million grant. The remaining balance will be funded by a Rural
Development Agency low-interest loan.
The Shipshewana Lake
project consists of 3.5 miles of pressure sewer and force mains and 150
package sewage grinder pump stations.
The new system, which
will serve approximately 200 homes, is scheduled to be complete by 2010.
The Lake Shipshewana
system was designed by Bonar Group. Contact Steve Henschen at
